The theme of Columbus School this year is Soaring to Excellence. Enabling each student to excel in all aspects of their educational program is the goal of each staff member. Columbus School has been designated a Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education.
Columbus Elementary School consists of a pre-kindergarten class, as well as kindergarten through sixth grade program. Students are provided with the services of specialists in the areas of Art, Music, Library and Physical Education; our limited English proficiency students are assisted by English Language Specialists. The staff is supported by ancillary services of a speech specialist, resource specialist, school psychologist, school social worker, nurse and literacy coaches.
Our multicultural student body is consistently involved in activities which celebrate their ethic background. A popular Saturday program encourages a cooperative learning environment between parent and child. Parent Involvement Day in February invites parents to spend some time in their child's classroom and be encouraged by motivational speakers.
Our students are constantly encouraged to become lifelong readers through activities such as book fairs, Dr. Seuss Day, B.E.A.R. Day (Be Excited About Reading), and Summer reading assemblies. Students are introduced to cultural arts through the efforts of our art teacher, who has secured a grant through Westchester Arts Council. This grant enables our students to work with professional artists in mixed media. The music department provides instrumental experiences including a drum line group, as well as musical productions, such as a Michael Jackson tribute.
